Efficiency of H center stabilization in alkali halide crystals at low-temperature uniaxial deformation

2020

The efficiency of stabilization of H centers as well as its dependence on the degree of uniaxial deformation are considered within the framework of the modified geometric model of alkali halides. It is shown that stabilization of H centers is difficult in KI and RbI crystals, while in other NaCl-type crystals it becomes quite probable. Under uniaxial deformation, the interstitial space, in which the defect will be located, decreases, and the efficiency decrease. In the case of cesium halides, the orientation of the H centers takes place predominantly in the direction; therefore, the criteria for their stabilization differ from the NaCl-type alkali halide crystals. According to calculations,…

Performance of two innovative stress sensors imbedded in mortar joints of new masonry elements

2021

Abstract Many historical cities enjoy the presence of masonry buildings with inestimable historical, artistic and cultural value. Old masonry buildings often suffer structural deficiencies, design faults and materials aging process. In recent years, many researchers focused their attention on the opportunities that structural health monitoring (SHM) can ensure for the health state of existing masonry structures, where damage can be difficult to be promptly predicted, pontentially causing abrupt collapses, with high risks for the community. This paper presents an experimental study on the effectiveness of two types of stress sensor for SHM of new masonry elements. Ceramic piezoelectric senso…

Concrete columns confined with fibre reinforced cementitious mortars: Experimentation and modelling

2014

Abstract The structural behaviour of concrete columns strengthened with a system made up of fibre nets embedded in an inorganic stabilized cementitious matrix under an uniaxial load was investigated. Medium size specimens with circular and square cross-section were cast and subjected to monotonic uniaxial compression, to investigate the efficiency of a p-Phenylene BenzobisOxazole (PBO) Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Mortar (FRCM) system in increasing both strength and ductility. The experimental results show that the confinement system adopted produced a noticeable increment in strength and ductility, though the low mechanical ratios of fibre considered were not always able to ensure hardeni…

A continuum damage model to simulate failure in composite plates under uniaxial compression

2007

Experimental investigations and numerical simulations are performed in order to numerically predict the buckling behaviour of thin composite laminated specimens. Experiments are aimed at two objectives: the first is to completely characterize the carbon/epoxy material under simple loading configurations, the second is to test this material in buckling and post-buckling situations. The data collected with the first campaign of experiments are used to obtain the strength parameters required to define a damage model based on the failure theory by Tsai-Wu. This model is implemented in a Finite Element (FE) code and numerical simulations of buckling are executed for unidirectional and cross-ply …

General stress-strain model for concrete or masonry response under uniaxial cyclic compression

2002

The paper proposes analytical forms able to represent with very good approximation the constitutive law experimentally deducible by means of uniaxial cyclic compressive tests on material having softening post-peak behaviour in compression and negligible tensile strength. The envelope, unloading and reloading curves characterizing the proposed model adequately approach structural responses corresponding to different levels of nonlinearity and ductility, requiring a not very high number of parameters to be calibrated experimentally. The reliability of the model is shown by comparing the results that it is able to provide with the ones analytically deduced from two reference models (one for co…

Cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence study of plastically deformed ZnTe bulk single crystals

2001

Samples of zinc telluride bulk single crystals, which were deformed in uniaxial compression, have been studied by photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL). As a particular feature the deformed samples present a PL emission band peaked at 603 nm, whose intensity increases as the plastic deformation does. This band is related to the density of dislocations produced during the interaction of slip systems. This hypothesis is supported by CL images. which reveal the activation of the successive slip systems corresponding to different levels of deformation.

Experimental investigation on BFRCM confinement of masonry cylinders and comparison with BFRP system

2021

Abstract Fabric reinforced cementitious mortar (FRCM) materials have started to be employed during the last years with the aim of overcoming the drawbacks related to the use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, proving to be potentially suitable for strengthening masonry structures. Moreover, the will to develop materials able to guarantee a certain degree of sustainability without renouncing to adequate mechanical properties has drawn the attention to the use of basalt fibres, which appear to be a valid alternative to carbon or glass fibres. This work presents an experimental investigation on a basalt FRCM (BFRCM) system to confine circular masonry columns, aimed at evaluating the…

Martensitic phase transformation cubic-orthorhombic of NaCN and (NaCN)0.98 (KCN)0.02

1990

The ferroelastic cubic-orthorhombic transition of single crystals NaCN and (NaCN)0.98 (KCN)0.02 has been studied by x-ray diffraction. The domain configuration obtained is consistent with the Wechsler, Lieberman, Read-model for martensitic transformations.
